In Term 3, the Turanga Team went to the Village Valley Center for gymnastics on a Wednesday afternoon. It was heaps of fun and we learnt new ways to use our most amazing machine and practiced our gymnastics skills. Check out our video to see some of our moves.

Last term we had a goal in Room 15 for everyone to have natural food for brainfood. We had to have nuts, fruit, or vegetables. We learnt what was really in our brainfood that was in packets. They had so much added sugar! Yuck! It was great when we all had natural food for brainfood!!

Last week, Arnya bought in her new little pet to show us. It was a tiny piglet named Blackberry! Her family found it in the bush and it didn't have a mother to look after it, so they took it home. It is so little they have to give it a bottle to drink and feed it. It made lots of little snorting noises and it really liked snuggling Arnya! Thank-you Arnya for bringing him in to meet us!

Stu Duvel - the story teller

Today Stu Durval, an artist and story teller, came to Ashhurst school. He showed us some of his secrets for drawing cool cartoons by using numbers and letters. He told us story about a beach, a pirate, pudding, a Kauri tree, and love. He drew an awesome picture to set the scene for his story. He was able to put images in our minds as he was telling the story. He used lots of expression, movement, and different types of audience to get us interested in the story and excited about the ending. He enjoyed it so much, we came back to class and drew our own pirate scenes, and tomorrow we are going to write our own stories to go with our drawings. Thanks Stu Durval, the children of Room 15 really enjoyed your show!

Watch this space!

Miss Davidson made a video about her cat, Oscar. The children in Room 15 are learning how to make their own videos that retell in their own words a story they have read. Keep a look out in our 'Reading Response and Book Review' page to view our review of books and watch our mini videos we have made!

Morgan brought in traditional Samoan Weapons

On Wednesday 16 June I (Morgan) brought in 2 samoan weapons. Now thay are things to put in your home. One of them is dark brown and the other one is light brown. The dark brown one is pointy with a flat top carvings. The light brown one is the shape of a whales tail with carvings. They are not old. We got them 5 years ago. I have been to Samoa twice when I was 17 or 16 months old and when I was 4 with my dad.

Our 'ANZAC Day' Visitor

Last week we had a visit from Lt Lynn from the New Zealand Army. He is only a young officer and wasn't in the war, but he knew lots about WW1. We asked him some of our questions on our ANZAC Day wonderings chart and he answered them all! We learnt many new facts and gained lots of information about ANZAC Day and the importance of celebrating it. We gave him one of our yummy Anzac biscuits we made to say thank-you.

ANZAC Biscuits

On Tuesday afternoon we made ANZAC Biscuits. We put them into little bags to take home and share. To tie the bags, we made little labels that explained why the soldiers in WW1 were sent ANZAC biscuits as a treat. Did you know: the soldiers didn't receive the biscuits until two months after they were sent! However, they were still crunchy and good to eat! There are some photos of our some of our labels on a slide show.

Welcome Back to Term Two!

Welcome back to the new term. I hope you all had a fantastic holiday! We had a great start back in Week 1 last week, with lots of discussion about our holiday activities. This term we have lots of exciting learning experiences planned. Our inquiry this term is 'Our Beautiful World', and we will be gaining research and information skills through learning about what makes our world beautiful. As ANZAC Day was in the weekend, we began learning about the importance of ANZAC Day and the significance of some ANZAC symbols. This will be continuing on through into Week 2, with a special visitor booked to come in on Tuesday 27th April. We will keep you posted of our ANZAC learning!
